Uruguay during the 1970’s: the country is hit by a severe economic crisis, student and union groups mobilise for just living conditions and the urban guerrilla Tupamaros is formed. In 1973 the situation culminates in a military coup.

The film pans back and forth in time unfolding the emotional journey of its protagonist Liliana Pereira. Justina Bastos performs the role of young Liliana, a student and mother in Montevideo, engaging in political activism under the military regime. Present day Liliana played by Almodovarian veteran Cecilia Roth is living in exile in Spain, when she hears about the birth of her grandchild. On her ensuing trip to Uruguay to meet her now grown up son she is forced to confront her past, as painful memories resurface. Through flashbacks we witness Liliana being arrested, persecuted and tortured. Like so many other women standing up to their political ideals she falls victim to systematic violence and eventually loses custody of her son. But the women find a way to fight oppression by forming a bond of solidarity. Back into the present as Liliana is crossing paths with former fellow inmates while revisiting Uruguay, she realises that the bond of solidarity is still very much intact. It is here that we encounter the central theme of the film. The women’s sense of courage and solidarity is not only key to their survival, but proves to be highly inspiring and particularly relevant in times like these.

Attention: The beginning of the film contains depictions suggestive of torture and rape.
