Cosmonauta Es ist das Jahr 1957 in Italien, und die Sowjets haben just die Hündin Laika ins All geschossen. Luciana ist neun Jahre alt, läuft bei der Erstkommunionsfeier aus der Kirche weg und erklärt ihrer verdatterten Familie: "Ich gehe da nicht mehr hin, ich bin Kommunistin!"

Angestachelt von ihrem älteren Bruder, begeistert sie sich für die sowjetische Raumfahrt und fiebert mit, wenn es darum geht, schneller als die Amerikaner zu sein. 1963 ist Lucia 15 Jahre alt, Mitglied des kommunistischen Jugendverbandes, engagiert sich leidenschaftlich für die Ideale der Revolution und schwärmt für den gutaussehenden Gruppenleiter. Aber Luciana ist zu impulsiv und zu unkonventionell. Bald muss sie feststellen, dass Frauen, die Ideen haben und versuchen sich durchzusetzen, auch unter Kommunisten nicht unbedingt erwünscht sind. Ihre jungen Genossen nehmen sie nicht ernst und knutschen lieber mal mit hübschen Bürgerstöchtern. Als die Lage sich zuspitzt, ist ihr Bruder nicht da, um sie zu unterstützen, wie in der Kindheit. Luciana muss, genau wie Valentina Tereschkowa, die erste weibliche Kosmonautin, ihre Probleme ganz alleine lösen.

English: It is 1957, in Italy, and the Soviets have just boosted the dog Laika into space. Luciana is nine years old, and runs out of the church and away from her First Communion ceremony, explaining to her stunned family: "I ain't going there any more. I'm a Communist!" Incited by her elder brother, she is fascinated by the Soviets' space programme, and equally thrilled by them being faster than the Americans. In 1963 Lucia is 15 years old, a member of the Communist youth organization, passionately interested in the ideals of the revolution and romanticizes about the good-looking group-leader. However, Luciana is too impulsive and too unconventional. She must soon come to realize that women who have progressive ideas and who attempt to prevail, are not really desired, even among Communists. Her young comrades do not take her seriously and prefer to flirt and smooch with pretty daughters of the usual townsfolk. As the situation escalates, her brother is nowhere to be found to help her as previously in her childhood. Luciana has to resolve her problems, all alone - just like the first woman cosmonaut Valentina Tereschkowa.

Humorous, self-deprecating and at the same time quite precise in its contemporary details, Susanna Nicchiarelli recounts from the growing-up of her likeable and rebellious heroine. (IFFF Dortmund/Cologne 2010)

With Cosmonauta at the Dortmund-Cologne International Women's Film Festival 2010 she won the first prize for the best debut feature film.
